NYU Application

Located in “the city that never sleeps,” New York University is an exciting option for many high school students. The allure of the big city, combined with over 270 degree programs, make the NYU application a popular one for those applying to college. And, it’s not only one of the best universities in the state of New York, but also in the nation.

Completing the NYU application to the best of your ability is extremely important when it comes to gaining acceptance. With the NYU ranking so high (#25 on U.S. News Best National Universities list!), gaining admission into NYU is no small feat. So, the NYU application is the most important way to show admissions that you belong there.

When completing your NYU application, you’ll want to ensure that you meet the NYU application deadline. That means paying the New York University application fee and submitting all of the NYU application requirements on time.

Should I apply to NYU?

When going through the process of applying to college, creating your college list is an integral step in the application journey. The schools on your college list should each be a good fit for you.

Determining if a school is right for you will come down to many factors: financial aid, location, size, campus life, degree programs, and more. NYU is located in Manhattan, the heart of New York. The NYU enrollment is about 28,000 students (in undergraduate programs alone).

As a high-ranking and well-recognized university in one of the most well-known cities in the world, NYU admissions is certainly competitive. The NYU acceptance rate is just 12%. Applicants will need a high GPAs and a rigorous course load to stand out amongst the many hopeful applicants.

If you find that based on all the above factors, along with your own criterion, that completing the NYU application makes sense to you, then go ahead and apply!

How do I apply to NYU?

Students will need to complete the NYU application via the Common App. Students should plan carefully to submit the NYU application requirements by the NYU application deadline, which will vary depending on if you apply to Early Decision I, Early Decision II, or Regular Decision.

These requirements include completing supplemental essays as well as the personal essay. Currently, NYU is test-optional, which means you are not obliged to send in your SAT or ACT scores when completing the NYU application.

For more details on the NYU application, check out the NYU admissions page. For specifics, look to the NYU how to apply page.

What are the application requirements for New York University?

The requirements for the NYU application may vary based on the specific program you’re applying to. That’s why it’s important to check their specific requirements. However, many of the requirements will be the same for all applicants.

As we’ve mentioned, all applicants must submit their NYU application via the Common App. Therefore, the majority of requirements will also be submitted there. You will need to pay the NYU application fee. Additionally, when applying, you’ll need letters of recommendation, personal essay, transcripts, and the NYU application fee. You will also need to submit an English Language Proficiency exam if you’re an international applicant.

Depending on the program you’re applying to, you may need to submit a creative portfolio or have an interview. Some programs also require applicants to submit a CV or resume along with their NYU application.

While components like the NYU application fee are mandatory (barring a fee waiver), sending in standardized test scores is currently optional. However, only plan to send in good SAT scores. For NYU, that means a score of 1470 or higher.

And keep in mind, all of these requirements must be submitted by the NYU application deadline. Requirements can change yearly, so be sure to check the admissions site for the most up-to-date information.

Keep in mind that with the competitive NYU acceptance rate, you’ll want to make each part of your NYU application the very best it can be. The essays are a requirement and also one of the most important ways for admissions officers to get to know you more personally. Take time to write them and look at some NYU essay examples to see what works. Check out our “how to get into NYU” guide for more tips on crafting the best application possible.

Does NYU offer Early Decision?

While there is no NYU Early Action deadline, applicants do have two different options for completing the  NYU application for an Early Decision deadline. The Early Decision I deadline is November 1st, and applicants will receive an admissions decision December 15th. The Early Decision II deadline is January 1st, and applicants will receive an admissions decision by February 15th

If you decide to complete your NYU application for one of the Early Decision deadlines, you should understand just what that entails. As an Early Decision applicant, you are entering a binding agreement to attend NYU if accepted. In fact, if accepted, you’ll need to withdraw all your other applications.

Exceptions are granted in rare circumstances. For example, if you weren’t accepted to the program of your choice or if your financial aid package doesn’t meet your financial needs.

Applying Early Decision is a big decision. There is no NYU Early Action deadline which means all applicants applying for the Early Decision deadlines are committing to attend NYU if accepted. Therefore, you should only do so if NYU is your top choice.

How do I check my NYU application status?

If you apply Regular Decision, your NYU application will be due January 5th,and you will receive your admissions decision by April 1st. However, once you submit your NYU application you should periodically check your NYU application status via the NYU application portal. This ensures you won’t miss any important (and required) documents that need to be submitted.

When applying to college at NYU, you will create an account and have access to the NYU application portal. Through the NYU application portal, you will be able to check your NYU application status.

When is the NYU application deadline?

When it comes to submitting your NYU application, you have options when it comes to deadlines. If you decide to apply Early Decision I or II, you will need to complete your New York University application earlier than if you apply Regular Decision. Finally, there is no NYU Early Action deadline.

Here are the three NYU application deadlines:

  • Early Decision I: November 1st
  • Early Decision II: January 1st
  • Regular Decision: January 5th

You might notice that there are only a few days’ difference between the Early Decision II and Regular Decision when it comes to each NYU application deadline. When deciding which to apply to, keep in mind that Early Decision applicants enter a binding agreement if accepted. Again, there is no NYU Early Action deadline, so remember to only apply Early Decision if you are sure it’s the school for you.

When applying, you’ll need to send in all application requirements by the specified deadline. This includes the NYU application fee. Applicants can check their NYU application status via the NYU application portal.

I am a proud former first-generation college student who is now a first-generation professional. I have 6+ years of professional experience working with students and their families to navigate the higher education system. I recently (within the last 5 years) obtained a master's degree in education with an emphasis in Student Affairs from UCLA. I attended University of California, Berkeley for my undergraduate education and my major was Psychology with a minor in Chicano Studies. My passion is to assist students and their families on their higher education journey. A skill I feel I have while working with students is truly listening to their wants and needs and adapting my advising from there. I approach my work by honoring my students' lived experiences. On a one-on-one basis I’ve assisted with creating college school lists, academic road mapping, how to choose and change a major, financial aid, and career prep. Outside of student affairs I enjoy reading, cycling, and spending time with my family and friends.

As an accomplished educator, my background in tutoring has prepared me exceptionally well to serve as a college advisor. I have a proven track record of tutoring a wide range of subjects, including English Literature & Language, Math, History, French, Italian, Latin, Biology, and Physics. Through my expertise, I consistently elevate students' academic performance, often resulting in a minimum of a three-grade improvement within the first year of instruction. This highlights both the effectiveness of my teaching methods and my ability to provide tailored support to meet each student's unique needs and goals. What sets me apart is not just my professional experience but also my personal journey through the college application process. I took the SATs, and subject tests (in Maths and English Literature), scoring in the top 99th percentile for all, and wrote my college essays for Common App with very limited assistance from school advisors. My firsthand experience navigating the complexities of the college application process equips me to offer valuable insights to students embarking on the same journey. Furthermore, my unique experience of being a U.S. citizen applying to colleges while attending highschool in London, UK, allows me to provide specialized guidance to international students looking to pursue higher education in the United States. I understand the distinct challenges and considerations that international students face and can offer tailored support to help them achieve their academic goals in a foreign educational system.

Like many residents of Washington Heights, I was born to immigrant parents who came here with nothing and had limited options. I am family-oriented, an advisor, a leader, and passionate about what I do. I have been a college advisor for the past 5 years. Within this position, I have been able to advise students at such a pivotal point in their lives where I am able to guide them towards a better future, whether it be college, trade school, work, or even building some post-secondary plan. I graduated with my Master's in Higher Education and Student Affairs from NYU Steinhardt, hoping to push further to become the best version of myself and continue advising students toward a better future. This expedition was not only for me but for others to see that it is possible, underserved students need representation. One must know that no one can stop you from achieving your goals but yourself.

I am currently pursuing a PhD in Hispanic Studies at Brown University. I have been helping high school students with the college admissions process since 2018, and I am passionate about demystifying college admissions and helping students find schools and programs that are a good academic, social, and economic fit for them.
