Dartmouth Acceptance Rate

Acceptance Rate 6%
Acceptance Deadline January 3

Dartmouth College is one of the nation’s most selective colleges. It follows, then, that the Dartmouth acceptance rate is incredibly low: just 6%.

Located in rural Hanover, New Hampshire, Dartmouth is far from large cities such as Boston. Still, the school offers a one-of-a-kind educational experience that draws students from around the globe. The low Dartmouth acceptance rate reflects the school’s prestige and popularity among applicants.

Overall, the Dartmouth College acceptance rate cannot indicate whether the school is a good fit for you. However, it does reflect the school’s broad appeal. Without a doubt, Dartmouth College has a lot to offer. From strong academic programs to unique study abroad opportunities, Dartmouth provides students with an incredible and holistic education.

Before deciding whether to apply to Dartmouth, it’s important to consider whether it is a good fit for you. You should also consider where Dartmouth would fall on your college list. Undoubtedly, the Dartmouth College acceptance rate means it would be a reach college for all students.

When considering the Dartmouth acceptance rate, think about what a low acceptance rate means for your own application. You should also learn about the implications of applying Early Decision to a school like Dartmouth.

What is the acceptance rate for Dartmouth?

The Dartmouth acceptance rate for Regular Decision is 6%, and the Dartmouth Early Decision acceptance rate is 19%.

Given the Dartmouth acceptance rate, getting into Dartmouth is no easy feat. In 2022, Dartmouth received 28,841 applications, the greatest number of all time. Of those, 1,173 were admitted Regular Decision. An additional 578 were admitted Early Decision, and 47 were matched through the Questbridge Program.

When we compare these statistics with those from the previous year, we see that the Dartmouth acceptance rate is only decreasing. In 2021, 530 out of 2,633 Early Decision applicants were admitted, a acceptance rate of 21%. The Regular Decision Dartmouth acceptance rate for this same year was 6.4%. As such, the acceptance rate for Dartmouth shows no signs of increasing.

More details about acceptance rates

When looking at college acceptance rates, it is important to consider what they mean for students applying to college. For example, when putting together your college list, you should look at college acceptance rates to ensure you include schools with differing levels of selectivity. This will help you craft a balanced college list.

Acceptance rates can also inform your application strategy. For example, if a school has a low acceptance rate like the Dartmouth acceptance rate, then you may wish to apply early. This may increase your odds of admission.

However, the Dartmouth College acceptance rate does not make it a better school for you. Colleges have limited seats, and sometimes many students wish to attend. To decide whether a school is right for you, focus on other indicators. These may include the strength of its academic programs in your intended majors, its size, or its affordability.

Is Dartmouth an Ivy League School?

Yes, Dartmouth is an Ivy League school. In fact, the school’s position in the Ivy League is one of the reasons that the acceptance rate for Dartmouth is so low. Indeed, Ivy League schools have extremely low college acceptance rates. However, Ivy League colleges are not a good match for every student.

In general, the Ivy League designation adds prestige to a school’s name. However, the title of Ivy League actually refers to the athletic conference that includes these top colleges. There are eight Ivy League universities. They include Dartmouth, Harvard, the University of Pennsylvania, Yale, Cornell, Princeton, Columbia, and Brown. While these colleges have plenty to offer, you can also get a great education at hundreds of universities across the nation.

So, when considering whether to apply to Dartmouth, don’t focus on the Ivy League designation alone. Instead, ensure Dartmouth meets your academic, personal, financial, and social needs. Don’t allow the school’s title as an Ivy League or the low Dartmouth acceptance rate to be the sole reasons you apply.

What is Dartmouth known for?

Aside from the low Dartmouth College acceptance rate, the school is known for many features. Founded in 1769, Dartmouth College is one of the nation’s oldest universities. Dartmouth was originally intended to educate Native American students. Over its existence, it has attracted a diverse and accomplished network of 80,000 alumni.

According to U.S. News, Dartmouth ranks #12 nationally. Dartmouth has a high national ranking for several reasons. Some of these include graduate outcomes, teaching quality, living learning communities, and access to research opportunities. Dartmouth’s study abroad programs are unique in that they are built into coursework. This gives students on-the-ground experience learning about a topic or researching a question of interest.

Dartmouth College also has four graduate and professional schools. They include the Geisel School of Medicine, the Thayer School of Engineering, the Tuck School of Business, and the Guarini School of Graduate and Advanced Studies. While most colleges refer to themselves as universities if they have graduate programs, Dartmouth intentionally chose to keep the name Dartmouth College to emphasize its commitment to undergraduate education. With so much to offer students, it’s no wonder that the Dartmouth acceptance rate is so selective.

Can I get into Dartmouth with a 3.6 GPA?

Given the low Dartmouth College acceptance rate, many students wonder how to get into Dartmouth. Dartmouth admissions uses a holistic process. This means that the admissions team reviews many factors, including grades, essays, recommendation letters, and extracurricular activities. A common concern is whether there are Dartmouth GPA requirements.

Grades are always an important part of the college admissions process. However, there are no specific Dartmouth GPA requirements. Dartmouth also does not report the average GPA of its incoming students. Still, since 93% of 2022 admitted students rank in the top 10% of their high school class, we can assume that it is quite high. As such, it is important to demonstrate strong academic achievement in your Dartmouth application. While there are no Dartmouth GPA requirements, a high GPA will increase your admissions odds.

Getting into Dartmouth Early Decision

Many students also wonder how to get into Dartmouth Early Decision. Early Decision is an application deadline that comes earlier in the application cycle. For Dartmouth, the deadline has traditionally been November 1.

Applying to Dartmouth Early Decision is not a decision to make lightly. Indeed, Early Decision is binding, meaning that if you get in, you are required to attend. So, applying Early Decision is best suited for students who are sure they wish to attend Dartmouth. It also requires students to know that their families can afford whatever financial aid package they receive.

Understanding the Dartmouth Early Decision acceptance rate

The good news is that applying Early Decision does increase a student’s odds in the Dartmouth admissions process. At first glance, the Dartmouth Early Decision acceptance rate of 19% is more than three times the Regular Decision rate of 6%.

However, it is important to keep in mind that ED applicants also include recruited athletes as well as many high-achieving students. As a result, the Dartmouth Early Decision acceptance rate may appear falsely inflated compared to the Dartmouth acceptance rate for Regular Decision. Still, it does help to apply early.

Other Dartmouth admissions statistics to consider

The low Dartmouth acceptance rate can impact several elements of your application strategy.

In the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, many schools have become test optional, including Dartmouth. For the time being, students may opt to not submit SAT or ACT scores. This means that other aspects of their applications will carry more weight.

However, the average SAT score for admitted applicants for the Class of 2027 was 1440-1560. The mid-50% range of ACT scores for the same class was 33-35. From this, we know that strong SAT and ACT scores can only help an applicant overcome the low Dartmouth College acceptance rate.

Dartmouth Acceptance Rate Takeaways

The Dartmouth acceptance rate is among the lowest in the nation. However, it is important to remember that there are many factors in the Dartmouth application process. As such, start preparing early. That way, you can build a cohesive application that showcases your strengths. Don’t let the Dartmouth College acceptance rate make you reluctant to apply.

Baker-Berry Library

Located on the north side of the Dartmouth Green is another important campus site, Baker-Berry Library. The library was built in 1928, inspired by Independence Hall. What is Dartmouth College known for?

Dartmouth College is known for being one of eight Ivy League universities in the nation. This prestigious title reflects Dartmouth’s academic rigor, high expectations, and exceptional alumni. While that can appeal to many, it also means that Dartmouth admissions is highly selective. As an Ivy League school, it’s no surprise that Dartmouth consistently ranks highly among top colleges. Which airport is closest to Dartmouth College?

There are a few airports close to Dartmouth’s campus. For students planning a Dartmouth campus visit, transportation will be a key factor.

Once again, where is Dartmouth? Hanover, New Hampshire. But, what airports are nearby? Well, Lebanon (N.H.) Municipal Airport (LEB) is located just 7 miles from campus. They run commuter flights from Boston and New York. Manchester-Boston Regional Airport (MHT) is located about 90 minutes from Hanover.

However, Dartmouth Admissions suggests flying into Boston Logan (BOS) airport. This is the largest nearby airport and will have the most economical flight options. Although it’s located 2.5 hours south of Hanover, you can easily take the Dartmouth Coach straight to campus.

How far is Dartmouth from Boston?

Boston is about a 2.5 hour drive from Hanover. While the two places aren’t exactly close neighbors, it is the closest big city to Dartmouth’s rural location. It also makes Boston an easy choice for students looking to get out of campus for the weekend. Boston South Station is within walking distance to attractions like the New England Aquarium and the Institute of Contemporary Art.

The best part: you don’t need a car to get to Boston from Dartmouth. The Dartmouth Coach offers $35 one-way trips between Hanover and Boston. So, students and their families can take the Dartmouth Coach from the Logan Airport or Boston South Station.

How to visit Dartmouth College

While we can answer “where is Dartmouth” in a variety of ways, there’s only so much you can learn online. Visitation Programs

Dartmouth also offers visitation programs to seniors from historically underrepresented backgrounds and communities. Through these visits, high school students learn what it’s like day-to-day on the Dartmouth campus. Both the Dartmouth Bound and Indigenous Fly-In programs require an application. If interested, keep an eye out for the Dartmouth application to each program. Students selected will have their travel costs, housing, and meals covered on these extended campus visits.

Students should also make the most of their Dartmouth college visit. There’s much more to a visit than answering “where is Dartmouth College located?” or studying the map of Dartmouth campus. The Dartmouth location can make a major difference for prospective applicants.

University of Notre Dame

I hold my B.A. in Pre-Health Studies and Political Science from the University of Notre Dame, where I graduated in the Spring of 2021, Summa Cum Laude and Phi Beta Kappa, having completed a 4-year program in 3 years. I am a current first-year medical student at Indiana University School of Medicine, where I plan to graduate with my M.D. in 2027. Between my undergraduate and graduate studies, I spent two gap years exploring my interests: applying cutting-edge computational techniques to the study of a rare genetic disorder in a research lab at Notre Dame, studying the most effective policies to aid in the elimination of malaria on-site in Dhaka, Bangladesh, and working to gain insightful clinical experience in a hospital near my hometown. Prior to joining CollegeAdvisor.com, I helped both international and U.S. students craft successful applications to both undergraduate and graduate programs. I have personally experienced both undergraduate and medical school applications within the past few years and understand firsthand how daunting it can seem, but enjoy using my expertise to help guide students through the process. With CollegeAdvisor.com, I work mostly with students applying to careers in the health professions, including both conventional pre-medical paths and accelerated BS/MD programs.

I am a current senior at Dartmouth College and will be graduating in June of 2024 with a B.S. in Neuroscience and a double minor in Global Health in Anthropology and Human Biology in the pre-medical track. I am also a proud QuestBridge Scholar and Hispanic Scholarship Fund Scholar, both amazing programs that have guided, supported, and funded my undergraduate experience. In addition, in July of 2024, I will be starting medical school at Geisel School of Medicine at Dartmouth as an early assurance MD candidate. Consequently, I have plenty of tips and hidden knowledge to share with anybody interested in these highly selective programs and scholarships, as well as the pre-health track, and would love to connect with anybody interested in exploring these opportunities and/or paths! In terms of my advising and mentorship experience, I began tutoring for regular subjects in early high school and later, during the latter half of my junior year, I tutored for the ACT and SAT. Today, I continue this work, but have also been working as a college counselor since June of 2020. Through my 5+ years of experience, I have learned to form close connections with my students as a student myself, meeting them where they are while guiding and supporting them through their college-preparation and application processes. In the past 3 years, I have worked with over 15 students in their college application process, all of which have received at least 3 college acceptances and most of which have been accepted into some of the most competitive colleges and universities in the country. While some of these students have been interested in the pre-health track, I have also worked with various students interested in law, engineering, computer science, humanities, performing arts, aviation, finance, business and entrepreneurship, and psychology. This has offered me the opportunity to become familiar with different colleges that have specialized programs as well as unique scholarships that students interested in certain academic areas can take advantage of! With my years of experience in the field in addition to my personal successes, I am knowledgeable of the curricular demands and extracurricular expectations of various disciplines. Furthermore, I have also had the privilege of working with 2 international students! Working with them helped me grasp the perspective of applying to college in the US as an international student, considering the financial, academic, lingual, and sociocultural challenges that come with being a foreigner. All in all, I am extremely passionate about mentoring and advising students who are going through what can be a very overwhelming and challenging process. I love listening to stories, asking inquisitive questions, giving constructive feedback, and forming close relationships with those I work with. Working hand in hand with both the students and their families, I hope to serve as a good resource that can answer questions, settle uncertainties, and find solutions. With these and the many more tools I have put under my belt, I help students figure out how to best express their goals based on their interests, talents, and values and guide them in effectively sharing their story - their who and why - to curate a wholesome and impressive application.
